Cooper and Quinn arrived back at headquarters after interviewing Adele Maguire early that Friday afternoon. Cooper wanted to know more about Nate Maguire and his associations with members of the Chiefs, and unfortunately the only person he could ask was Des Saunders.
âI know Saunders is a jerk, but we still have to work with him,â said Quinn as they rode the elevator to the Organised Crime squad room. âHeâs heading up the team working on the Chiefs.â
âYeah, I know. How the heck did he get that gig? Last time we saw him he was in Rochfordâs bad books for not letting us move on a suspect when we wanted to. We could have saved a lot of heartache if we hadnât been delayed because of him. Rochford was gunning for him after that, but next thing we know heâs heading up a team here.â The lift door opened, and they made their way down the corridor to Saundersâs office.
âI donât get it either, boss. Maybe heâs got friends in high places.â
âMaybe.â
The door to his office was closed, but Cooper could see Saunders was there through the window. He knocked, and Saunders made them wait a moment too long before finally beckoning them in.
âTake a seat,â he said, indicating the two chairs in front of his desk.
Cooper and Quinn settled themselves, and Cooper glanced around the tidy office. It was so tidy Cooper wondered whether any work actually got done here. It was the complete opposite of Munroâs office. Saunders was the equivalent of Munro in rank and position, but he was nowhere near the calibre of the man himself.
âHowâs Stocky?â Saunders asked with a grin.
Cooper was momentarily taken aback by the question. He recovered quickly, and responded with âHowâs your wife?â
Neither man said anything after that, engaging in a weird stare-off instead, until Quinn pulled them into line.
âCut it out, you two. Weâve got a job to do here. Saunders â what can you tell us about Nate Maguireâs relationship with the Chiefs?â
Saunders broke eye contact with Cooper and focused his attention on Quinn. âNot much, besides what Iâve already shown you. Maguire hasnât been the focus of our investigation. Weâve been following Dom Lawrence and his sidekick, Paddy Clarke.â
âSo Maguire hasnât been seen with them on any other occasions?â Cooper asked.
âNot that weâre aware of. But weâve only been surveilling them recently, and not twenty-four seven. Your boy could have dealings with them weâre unaware of.â
Cooper turned and looked through the office window out into the squad room. Organised Crime had much the same layout as Homicide, with a few private offices such as the one they were in that surrounded an open-plan desk set up. Unlike Homicide, though, these desks all seemed to be occupied.
âHow come all your team are here?â Cooper asked. âWhy arenât they out following up leads? Catching bad guys? Or at least looking like theyâre doing something?â
âAre you trying to tell me how to do my job, Detective Sergeant Cooper?â
Cooper shrugged. âNope. Just curious as to how your team can monitor the Chiefs from in here.
