Cooper and Quinn arrived back at headquarters after interviewing Adele Maguire early that Friday afternoon. Cooper wanted to know more about Nate Maguire and his associations with members of the Chiefs, and unfortunately the only person he could ask was Des Saunders.

“I know Saunders is a jerk, but we still have to work with him,” said Quinn as they rode the elevator to the Organised Crime squad room. “He’s heading up the team working on the Chiefs.”

“Yeah, I know. How the heck did he get that gig? Last time we saw him he was in Rochford’s bad books for not letting us move on a suspect when we wanted to. We could have saved a lot of heartache if we hadn’t been delayed because of him. Rochford was gunning for him after that, but next thing we know he’s heading up a team here.” The lift door opened, and they made their way down the corridor to Saunders’s office.

“I don’t get it either, boss. Maybe he’s got friends in high places.”

“Maybe.”

The door to his office was closed, but Cooper could see Saunders was there through the window. He knocked, and Saunders made them wait a moment too long before finally beckoning them in.

“Take a seat,” he said, indicating the two chairs in front of his desk.

Cooper and Quinn settled themselves, and Cooper glanced around the tidy office. It was so tidy Cooper wondered whether any work actually got done here. It was the complete opposite of Munro’s office. Saunders was the equivalent of Munro in rank and position, but he was nowhere near the calibre of the man himself.

“How’s Stocky?” Saunders asked with a grin.

Cooper was momentarily taken aback by the question. He recovered quickly, and responded with “How’s your wife?”

Neither man said anything after that, engaging in a weird stare-off instead, until Quinn pulled them into line.

“Cut it out, you two. We’ve got a job to do here. Saunders – what can you tell us about Nate Maguire’s relationship with the Chiefs?”

Saunders broke eye contact with Cooper and focused his attention on Quinn. “Not much, besides what I’ve already shown you. Maguire hasn’t been the focus of our investigation. We’ve been following Dom Lawrence and his sidekick, Paddy Clarke.”

“So Maguire hasn’t been seen with them on any other occasions?” Cooper asked.

“Not that we’re aware of. But we’ve only been surveilling them recently, and not twenty-four seven. Your boy could have dealings with them we’re unaware of.”

Cooper turned and looked through the office window out into the squad room. Organised Crime had much the same layout as Homicide, with a few private offices such as the one they were in that surrounded an open-plan desk set up. Unlike Homicide, though, these desks all seemed to be occupied.

“How come all your team are here?” Cooper asked. “Why aren’t they out following up leads? Catching bad guys? Or at least looking like they’re doing something?”

“Are you trying to tell me how to do my job, Detective Sergeant Cooper?”

Cooper shrugged. “Nope. Just curious as to how your team can monitor the Chiefs from in here.
